Ever since I was an apprentice in the 70's, I have had many hours of enjoyment listening to my record collection. Everyone back then who were into music either owned or dreamed of owning a good Hi-Fi system and would boast as to who had the better system. People would compare their Hi-Fi in terms of which gave the best sound quality and Power in Watts RMS. Now of course we all expect good quality sound from our CD's. You can buy almost any record ever recorded on CD, but if you are like me and wondered if the quality from the new CD version had improved the sound compared to the older record version you may have found that the new CD version had the same poor sound quality as it's older LP. It had been prerecorded from the old studio tape with hiss included. I personally have been very disappointed with some of the CD's that have been released based upon an older LP album.

The cost alone of buying all new CD's of your favourite records is expensive. I decided a few years ago to try and find a way of getting my own record collection onto CD and try to improve the sound quality. There are some companies out there that will do the job for you and promise to take good care of your records during the transfer process but charge quite a lot with few guarantees. So instead I became interested in the recording and cleaning process for myself. Could I do an equally good job myself? Well, to my surprise I found that it is possible to do the job yourself and it made for a lot of personal satisfaction in doing a good job of the finished CD. So what is required and how and where do you start?
